Looking to lose your wires? You don't have to lose your mind. New and old computer systems can be easily upgraded with wireless products. Many installation instructions will have you run a simple software setup, plug the wireless device into your computer, and you're done. Well, OK, there are more pieces to the puzzle. You'll need a wireless access point (WAP) so your wireless devices can get on your home network and/or surf the internet. In most situations, the WAP will also serve as your high-speed internet router. This inexpensive piece of equipment installs between your DSL or cable modem and your computer(s). Wireless products for your computer Netgear, Linksys, and SMC are examples of well-known brands. They make WAPs and products for desktops and laptops. Some examples of wireless gear: a. Wireless USB adapter Designed for use with a desktop or laptop, these devices generally hook up to your computer's USB port. b. Wireless PCMCIA card Designed for use with your laptop, this device can be inserted into the PCMCIA slot of your laptop. c. Wireless PCI card Designed for use with desktop computers, this device must be installed inside your computer in an available PCI slot. |
